the saturdays

In this photograph ‘The Saturdays’ are dressed in a vintage style. There clothes coordinate with each other as the colours are simular, the outfits are also quite revealing. There facial expressions are rather sexual and accessable but in a way not. The way in which they are stood also suggests this.

girlsaloud

I like the way the girls are positioned in thie photo because they look formal but in a sexy kind of style. There facial expressions vary, some smiling and others looking stern and serious. I like the way the two in the middle are perched on a seat with the others posing around them. The outfits they are wearing are well suited and fit the image it is trying to give. They are all dressed in the black in simular clothing but each one has an individual look.

girls aloud 2

In this photograph the girls are all wearing bright colours. This makes them stand out against the light background. The way in which they are postition is in a line but all in different poses facing in all different directions. They are dressed fashionably and modern suiting the band well.

Research on magazine cover

November 13, 2009 at 10:17 am (practical work on MM)

kerrang

Kerrang magazines are targeted at a specific type of audience and will most likely only appeal to people who like rock and heavy metal music. You can tell by just glancing at it that it has a scary effect which may disturb others. The page is illustrated with a photograph of the man in slipknot with a mask on his face. This is very bold and centered in the middle of the page to give the idea that it is staring out at you.

The colours of font used are mostly white, red black and an off yellow. There are a wide variety of fonts used for each headline. The fonts also have a scary/evil effect but are very bold and clear. The statement under the ‘slipknot’ heading is quite aggressive with relates to their music as it is quite loud and corruptive. Along the side of this also informs you what is inside the magazine as a list. There are also red splodges on the cover indicating blood to develop the effect more.

Twenty Thousand Streets – mise-en-scene

November 9, 2009 at 7:43 pm (theory work)

In Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky mise-en-scene is a big affect to the film. In the scene where they are sat at the dinner table the lighting is very dull with light only showing partially through the curtain, shining on part of the lady and table, but outside the weather looks bright. The setting is washed out of colour, creating a sad and severe lifeless effect.

The walls are plain with only a few pictures on the wall, we get a close up of this and see that the photographs are of him as a soldier. This gives us information of his background. Also the surrounding props signify his class clearly, they show wealthyness as it is very ornamental. In this scene two extra chairs have been placed around the table although there is only two of them, i think this is trying to give the feeling of emptiness as if something is missing.

We get close ups of the woman’s facial expressions, giving us a sense of her feelings. She looks very unsure of her self and quite uncomfortable as if there is tension between the pair of them. She is sat there with her arms folded staring at her food with anxiety. Where as the man on the other hand looks very at ease and comfortable, acting as if nothing is wrong and she is worrying needlessly. Although in some parts of the scene he is shaking whilst holding his cup but covering up by his language.

The class between them both shows quite significantly in this part of the film as there dress sense is quite different. Although they both had a late, rough night the night before, the man is dressed very formally and posh with correctness, but the women is dressed informally and quite scruffy.

classical

The cover for this classic fm magazine is illustrated with a young women whole is positioned to fill one side of the cover but as the main feature. There is also a picture of two other people in a much smaller context. The man has been cut out and made too look if he is stood behind a sign. The other is in a separate box with information of why in the box. There is also the free CD that covers part of the magazine, I think this is place there as it can show the consumer what the CD is and some of the songs which our featured in it.

The main colours used in this magazine are white black and red, and the fonts are all quite different. For the title and main headline they are bold and a lot larger to show the importance. The colours used for the font in the title vary through out by having ‘class’ and ‘f’ in different colours. This may be to give the reader the idea that it is a class magazine and the ‘f’ to show that it’s the radio station magazine.

There are many different layers to this magazine which gives it quite a jumble effect as they are all placed on top of each other. The woman in this magazine is placed on a white background but all of the headlines and other boxes etc. are placed on top of her.

There are different shapes and sized boxes on the information that give information of what is inside but the places on where these are put are very random and not ideal as some are placed on top of others cutting of information that the reader may want. The barcode is also positioned on top of other boxes as the top layer. I think this is an inappropriate place as it also cuts off words, making the magazine look quite tacky.

Along the top of the magazine is a short statement which is most likely a feature to all of the magazines they make. Also informing you in bold is says there is a free CD with this magazine. This is to attract the audience to be more intrigued as they get a free gift when purchasing this magazine.

Along the bottom of the magazine is the issue number, price and date which is very small and not too clear but gives the reader the information needed to buy it.

Music magazine cover research

November 3, 2009 at 10:36 am (practical work on MM)

 q magazine

The cover for this Q magazine is illustrated with a photograph of the band Coldplay.  It has been edited and cut onto the page. It is a full body shot of them looking very stern and serious. Coldplay are slightly off-centered in the page but overlapping the title of the magazine. Surrounding them are other groups, bands and headlines in a smaller context but set out in a sophisticated style making it more formal rather than a messier, random look.

The pictures are placed on a plain white background which emphasizes the importance of the band but due to the page being filled with different features it is fully packed to appeal people. Having looked at a few ‘Q magazines’ I noticed that their format of colours are white, red and black, these colours are very bold and striking.

There are a wide variety of fonts used on this cover which are all different sizes to create effect. Some headlines are a lot bigger than others showing the importance of them. The fonts used also don’t have any effects to them; they are flat onto the page. As Coldplay are the main feature of this magazine their photograph and group named are printed much larger than the surrounding features, it is also in a different colour font making it stand out from the rest. As it doesn’t want to just attract people who like Coldplay, it has got headlines and photos of other bands which will help appeal to a wider audience.

It logo – title of the magazine ‘Q’ is placed in two areas of the magazine, it is at the top of the magazine to show what type of music magazine they are reading and also down at the bottom with a 5 star rating showing that the magazine is at good quality and popular to all audience types. There are also different layers on top of this, which shows that that is the main background for most of the ‘Q music magazines’ but images are placed on top give it a crowded, over-filled look. There are also two bands placed along the top and bottom giving an edge to the page. These are also quite bold and give valid information to the reader.

The barcode is in a very insignificant place to make sure it is not in the way of anything of any importance. Also there is a date, price and issue number at the top of the cover in a very small font as it is needed on the magazine but the makers of the magazine obviously wanted the other writing to stand out a lot more than this.

Camera, editing and sound of Hawkins

October 25, 2009 at 1:24 pm (theory work)

At the start of the scene there is a close up of Hawkins looking in pain and confussion it then zooms out to see the whole room but everyting as blurred apart from him but you can make out that there is someone in the background looking in. There is then a two shots of his wife and a ma n discussing Hawkins case. There is then a tilt as we see Hawkins coming down the stairs. It then flickers on to the next scene where they are at a party. The back ground music is peopel playing instruments and it zooms into these people then focuses on a man dancings. There is an over the shoulder shot f the wife looking at Hawkins which quickly changes to and eye line match of her staring at this man dancing which looks alot like Hawkins. There is then a pan of Hawkins getting up at dancing and it then is a close up of him with out a fixed frame tracking him whilst he is dancing. There is then a two shot of the wife and the othe r man watching and talking about Hawkings. We then see Hawkins and his wife walking home. This is a long shot of the two of them.

Photographs for informal magazine

October 23, 2009 at 9:49 am (practical work on SM)

photo I chose to take this picture as it shows a group of people chatting which would be suitable for the informal magazine.

photo This photo shows a group of friends which i thought would be appropiate for the magazine cover.

photo This also shows people in the common room chatting and enjoying themselves.
